Obtaining Access to PPPL's TRANSP data

• PPPL Users
  • To submit TRANSP runs:
    send email stating you want to make transp runs, your user name and contact person to: transp@pppl.gov
    
• Off-site Users (running from a non pppl node)
  • To read TRANSP data from the PPPL MDSplus Server
    you must be on a "trusted" host
  • To submit TRANSP runs
    you will need a FusioGrid Certificate and an account at PPPL.
  • GA users might find Luc's notes helpful.
• JET runs

Getting Started

• Define MDSplus environment variables
  on the PPPL unix cluster:
  • On "portal", "viz" or "portalr5"

     After you have loaded a compiler:
      module load ntcc
         If you are a NSTX user: 
            module load nstx 
         Else: 
            module load mdsplus
    

  • If you are mainly reading from the same MDSplus Server
    define MDS_TRANSP_SERVER
  
  
  
• Connect to / open a run
  • Example to check if you can connect to a Server:

      ~$ idl
       IDL> mdsconnect,'transpgrid.pppl.gov'
    

  • for PPPL you need to provide:
    • Server Name
      transpgrid.pppl.gov
      For PPPL supported Tools:
      • Tokamak Name (e.g.: NSTX)
      • Shot Year (e.g.: 03)
      • Run Id (e.g.: 111370A01)
      For Other Software:
      • Tree Name = transp_<tok> (e.g.: transp_nstx)
      • Pulse Number = translated Run Id (e.g.: 1113700101)
    
    
  • for MIT you need to provide:
    • Server Name = alcdata-transp.psfc.mit.edu
    • Tree Name (e.g.: transp01)
    • Pulse Number (e.g.: 960116024)

  Extracting a text node from MDSplus:

  mds_get_inf - menu driven Utility to retrieve any text node from a MDSplus TRANSP Tree, e.g.:

       Name_List        Contents (TF.PLN file)
       Ufile Names      Comment
  

  RPLOT:

  the traditional TRANSP interactive plotting post-processor
  On the unix cluster, rplot is in $NTCCHOME/bin.
  For Off-site users, RPLOT is availabe as a NTCC Module
  
  

  UGRAF{1,2,3}:

  to view Ufiles

     select: OPTION M
     N < Ufile Lable > e.g. CUR 
    
     If TRANSP or BEAST Tree:
     ------------------------
     P .INPUTS
     select sub Option X to enter < RunId> (and < TOK.YR> for TRANSP)
     Note: you also have to enter the shot number.
  For Off-site users, ugraf is availabe as a NTCC Module
  

  
  

  TRXPL:

  - convert a TRANSP equilibrium timeslice into G-EQDSK format.

  - extract plasma state description from a TRANSP run.
  For Off-site users, trxpl is availabe as a NTCC Module

  PPPL e.g.:

  TRANSP runs are on the MDSplus Server on TRANSPGRID.
