Introduction to the PEST codes
PEST is a variational ideal MHD stability code which determines the
linear stabililty of an equilibrium to infinitesimal perturbations.
The perturbations are represented by a finite subset of a complete set of
functions. The variational problem can then
be reduced to the determination of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of
the generalized matrix eigenvalue problem.
We find it convenient to use a mixed finite-element and
fourier harmonics representation.
