Next: Making Linux secure
Up: Everything you always wanted
Previous: Outline
- Assumptions: You are familiar with UNIX (and like it)
- Linux is powerful, stable, free (but can be difficult and lack
hardware support)
- PPPL is moving towards a more Linux-heavy mix of UNIX
workstations and servers
- Using Linux/UNIX at the lab and at home allows for uniform operating
environment
My experience:
- Desktop at PPPL (stock RedHat 7.1 + Ximian Gnome 1.4 + openAFS
1.0.4)
- Desktop at home (heavily updated RedHat 6.2 + Ximian Gnome 1.4 +
openAFS (+ Win98), connected by @Home cable modem)
- Workstations/Servers @ PPPL (very occasional: kernel recompiles, afs
installation, etc)
