This document cpontains the follwing sections: A. HOWTO to build PEST3 outside the PPPL environment B. How to run PEST3 A. HOWTO to build PEST3 outside the PPPL environment ==================================================== Alex Pletzer (pletzer@pppl.gov) Thu Feb 22 11:35:15 EST 2001 1. PREREQUISITES: Must have the following compilers: * f90 * C * C++ the following tools: * gcc * perl * gmake * gunzip and the following packages: * LAPACK (http://www.netlib.org) * BLAS (http://www.netlib.org) * NETCDF (http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf) Optionally you may also want to have the MDSPLUS libraries installed. MDSPlus is developed at MIT and has become the standard Database storage system for experimental tokamak data. installed on system. These packages should be preferably installed under /usr/local 2. DOWNLOADING NTCC MODULES: In addition you will need to download the following modules from http://w3.pppl.gov/NTCC: * PEST3 (pest3.2.tar.gz) * XPLASMA (xplasma.tar.gz) * PSPLINE (pspline.tar.gz) * TRXPLIB (trxplib.tar.gz) In a suitable directory, deflate the files $ gunzip -c9 pest3.2.tar.gz | tar xvf - $ gunzip -c9 xplasma.tar.gz | tar xvf - $ gunzip -c9 pspline.tar.gz | tar xvf - $ gunzip -c9 trxplib.tar.gz | tar xvf - 3. ADAPTING THE MAKEFILES TO YOUR SETUP The Makefiles provided are quite flexible and should be usable as is on most UNIX platforms. However, these Makefiles may need to be edited if your packages (e.g. BLAS, LAPACK, NETCDF) don't reside in the usual places (/usr/local/lib). Edit share/Makefile.local.sample and save it as share/Makefile.local In particular, you may want to reset the following variables: LIBROOT=... NETCDF_DIR=... 4. BUILDING NTCC LIBRARIES Do: $ gmake libs 5. BUILDING PEST3 Do: $ cd pest3.2 then type either: $ gmake all NO_TRXPLIB=1 if you don't have MDSPlus, or $ gmake all to enable MDSPlus access 6. TESTING PEST3 $ gmake tests Some small differences can occur at the latest test stage, due to the limited precision associated with reading in ASCII formatted g-eqdsk files. B. HOW TO RUN PEST3 =================== The pest3.2 executable resides in /test with a symbolic link to /bin. A list of input options can be obtained by typing $ /bin/pest3.2 -h *NOTE* There should be no space between an option and its value (e.g. -m2 but not -m 2). The most important options are: -n Set the toroidal mode number (2) -m Set the resonant poloidal mode (3) -k"Ns1 Ns2 Ns3..." Set the number of radial nodes (more than one for a convergence study). -l Poloidal Fourier modes span -|Lmax1|,...+|Lmax1| (10) -b Conducting wall at distance Bw * the minor radius (0.) -i Input file format (1) -f Read equilibrium data from , which can be an MDSPlus path. A run will produce a file pest3.cdf. A matlab script is provided in the distribution to display the results.
