A correlation between the presence of energetic particle modes and long-period sawteeth is explored. The crash of monster sawteeth is explained in terms of the loss of the stabilizing fast particles due to the energetic particle modes. High qa discharges, which never develop long-period sawteeth, are explained in terms of ion loss due to Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes (TAE).
