He graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China with a B.S. in Physics. He then received a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin. Before coming to PPPL, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Fusion Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. From there, he was a research fellow at the Centre de Recherches en Physique des Plasmas at L'Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne. In 1998, he received the Kaul Foundation Prize for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research and Technology Development.
