Dr. Leonid Zakharov is a Principal Research Physicist in the Theory Department at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. Before coming to PPPL, he was a visiting research scientist at MIT and a senior scientist and the Head of the Computer Simulation Group at Kurchatov Institute for Atomic Energy. His scientific achievements include the development of LiWall concept of magnetic fusion reactor, discovery of magnetic propulsion of liquid lithium for tokamak-reactors, the theory of equilibrium reconstruction and plasm edge stabilization. Zakharov received an M.S. in General Physics from the Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia and a PhD in Plasma Physics and Chemistry from the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy, Moscow, Russia. He received an award in 1990 from the Romanian Academy Constantine Misculesu for contributions in the physics of thermonuclear plasmas and awards from the Kurchatov Institute for the best scientific results in 1987 for theory of disruptions and nonlinear fluid dynamics, in 1982 for studies of noncircular tokamaks and in 1978 for high beta tokamak theory.
