Wisc.), Bruce Cohen (LLNL), John De Groot (U.C. Davis), Martin Greenwald (MIT), Arnold Kritz (Lehigh Univ.), Ed Synakowski (PPPL), Richard Town (LLE, Rochester Univ.) The Snowmass meeting is rapidly approaching, and this email is to initiate dialogue among those who signed up to participate in the Snowmass Science subgroup on Turbulence and Transport, and to ask for titles from people who would like to give short presentations to this subgroup at Snowmass. ~15 people signed up to be "contributors" to this subgroup, and another ~60 to be "participants", but since the distinction might not have been clear when you signed up, this message is sent to all ~75 in this subgroup, and to people in the Waves and Particles subgroup, who may have overlapping interests with this subgroup. We have begun to plan the activities for this subgroup for Tuesday-Friday afternoon of the first week (3.5 hours each day). Because this group is supposed to be cross-cutting, we are planning 4 overview talks (2 talks from IFE and 2 from MFE) on Tuesday (or perhaps spread out over two days) to help initiate discussions. 4 overview talks of 30 minutes each, with 20 minutes for questions/discussion could fill the first afternoon (Tuesday). We are thinking of then setting aside time on Wednesday and Thursday for a larger number of people to give shorter presentations on various key issues they feel our group should consider. If these are 10 minute talks with 5-10 minutes of discussion each (3-4 talks per hour), then we can handle perhaps 18 to 24 talks on Wednesday and Thursday. Snowmass is not a regular scientific meeting where we talk about our own latest results, but a strategy meeting for the whole of fusion research during the next decade. The approach for this meeting will emphasize broad-based strategic issues with a format that allows for extension discussion. The two main broad questions our subgroup should address are: 1. What are the outstanding scientific issues in our subtopical area of plasma science (turbulence and transport)? 2. What can we do over the next decade to address these issues? To get dialogue started for this group, we are interested in receiving emails from those of you who want to contribute, giving a short reply to these two questions. At this point we are not looking for exhaustive written answers, but just a list of 3-6 bullets responding to each question. (For your reference, a list of the possible topics initially assigned to the 4 Plasma Science subgroups is at www.columbia.edu/~mem4/wg_plasma.html, but we should discuss what we think are the highest priority issues in our field.) Do you want to make a short presentation on some of these issues? What would the title of your presentation be? What would be the 3 or 4 main conclusions? (We would use these titles and the 3-4 main conclusions to try to organize the order of speakers and discussion topics.) Please email your replies (your brief answers to these 2 questions, and a title
