Membership Access

Editing the wiki requires wiki membership. To get wiki membership, please contact one of the following:

1. Enrique Merino

2. Dennis Boyle

3. Anurag Maan

and request an LTX Wiki username. If nothing is specified, a first-initial-last-name username will be supplied. You will be notified of your new membership login and a temporary password. You should log in and change your password at the soonest opportunity. Remember that you should not use your PPPL password for the LTX Wiki.

Basic Wikitext Editing

Every page has an "Edit source" button along the top, available only to wiki members (although non-members should have a "View source" button). Clicking it will move to the wikitext editor, which is LaTeX-esque: more complicated than the "WYSIWIG" visual editor but also (generally) more reliable. It's recommended to try and keep a consistent layout and style to make navigation easier (discussed below), and interlink wiki pages where possible to make best use of wiki functionality. When the topic of another page is referenced frequently, an interlink should at least be provided the first time it's mentioned in a new section. Always preview before saving, especially when handling images and galleries.

A general guide to wikitext formatting and commands is available here, and the same link is available at the bottom of the page when editing in wikitext mode, titled Editing help. Specific guides are also available for formatting, internal/external links and anchors, tables, images, and templates (e.g. the "Diagnostics" section at the bottom of each diagnostic page). Some common examples follow.

New pages should begin with
<div id="content_view" class="wiki" style="display: block">
__FORCETOC__
<div id="toc" style="float:right; padding:25px;">__TOC__</div>

and end with
</div>
to establish the wiki interpretation environment, and to right-justify the table of contents.

Note that single carriage-returns are ignored, and must be forced with <br> (HTML linebreak) commands.

Recommended Style Conventions

Because of the way MediaWiki defines headers, the page header is Level 1 (e.g. "=LTX Wiki Editing="), and the highest level on-page should be Level 2 (e.g. " ==Basic Wikitext Editing==").

Images can be added and right-justified with captions using code like
[[Image:<filename.JPG>|<X>px|right|thumb|'''Fig. <Y>:''' <caption>]]
where <filename.JPG> is the uploaded file name with extension, <X> is the width of the thumbnail in pixels, <Y> is the number of the figure on the page, and <caption> is the caption. It's recommended to label images with a figure number and short description (e.g. "Fig. 1: example caption") for ease of reference in the body.

Code snippets, tree nodes, and scripts and other command-line commands should be called out using either <code></code> shading (like this) or fixed-width <tt></tt> text (like this) to clearly distinguish it from the body text. This may also require the use of escape bracketing with <nowiki></nowiki>.

Related Pages and Category Templates

New diagnostic pages in particular should end with the following:
==Related Pages==
(links to photo documentation galleries in Photos, etc, can go here)
{{Template:Cat:Diagnostics}} Other existing category templates (e.g. Water Systems) can be found on this special page, and similar conventions should be used to construct any new ones needed.

LaTeX

As of Oct. 5th 2018, it is not possible to insert LaTeX expressions into LTX Wiki pages. However, an extension for this purpose exists, and the functionality will hopefully be available soon.

Photo & Artwork Galleries

New galleries can be added to the Photos and Artwork pages with the following:

<gallery mode="packed-hover" heights=100px>
Image:<filename 1>|<short description 1>

Image:<filename 2>|<short description 2>
.
.
.
Image:<filename N>|<short description N>

</gallery>

Where <filename X> and <short description X> are placeholders. See the wikitext of Photos for examples.

Not that galleries do not like having the "heights" parameter larger than about half the height in pixels of the original image, and may throw errors.
