Helium has a lower minimum breakdown voltage than air because collisions of electrons with air molecules can be inelastic. In addition, it is possible to form negative ions with these gases.

Exponential decay would likely be due to diffusion, since dn/dt\propto D\partial^{2}n/\partial x^{2}\propto-n. A decay like t − 1 would probably be due to recombination, since for this process, dn/dt\propto-n^{2}.
